Ready to find the best strain or medium? Steady data collection. Seamless screening.

The new Kuhner microTOM (micro-scale Transfer-Rate Online Measurement) is transforming early stage process development by measuring oxygen transfer rate (OTR) online in microtiter plates. With 96 individual sensors, it offers valuable online data to support for high experimental throughput R&D processes in microbial and cell culture applications. Easily installed in shakers and compatible with 96 or 24 well microtitre plates, the new Kuhner microTOM enables automated, label free screening. Therefore, no manual sampling, no offline analysis, and no interruptions, empowering researchers to elevate screening, optimise strain or media composition, and gain comprehensive process insights right from the start.

What sets new Kuhner microTOM apart?

  • Simultaneous online measurement of OTR in all 96 wells enables 96 parallel OTR measurements – unrivalled throughput for microplate-based cultivation. No offline sampling required, fully automated & continuous measurement
  • Low running costs with only standard MTP and sealing membrane necessary. No expensive consumables and reduced media consumption compared to shake flask cultivations with online measurement. Compact footprint 96 monitored bioreactors at the size of a Cryostorage box
  • Extremely sensitive suited for cell and microbial cultivations; next to microbes, it is also suitable for mammalian. Robust data for Clone, Media or Process parameter screening
  • Modular. Scalable. Flexible. Compatible with standard microplates. Compatible with all Kuhner shakers including Kuhner ISF1-Z, LT-X and Kuhner Kelvin+ incubators and potentially third-party systems (Kuhner Atelier project)
  • Compatible and ideal to monitor FeedPlate® of the Kuhner Feeding Technology. The fed-batch solution for microtitre plates (MTP’s)
  • Patented technology adapted from proven Kuhner TOM systems. Robust construction of housing and electronics

Type M (microbial) module

The Kuhner microTOM Type M is specifically designed for non-humidified incubators, featuring a fully integrated humidification and aeration system to ensure stable, controlled environmental conditions for sensitive laboratory processes. The system includes Kuhner microTOM Supply Type M, the Sensor Type M, a dedicated humidification unit, and complete cable and tube management. This compact, intelligent setup is ideal for laboratories needing reliable humidification and precise control in small scale incubator environments.

Type C (cell culture)

The Kuhner microTOM Type C (cell culture) is optimised for humidified incubators with or without CO₂ control, removing the need for an additional humidification system. Aeration comes directly from the incubator air. The system includes the Kuhner microTOM Supply Type C, Sensor Type C, and streamlined cable and tube management. This space-saving configuration is a practical solution for labs where integrated humidification is unnecessary.

The new Kuhner microTOM quantifies cellular activity every 20 minutes* via OTR a direct measure of metabolic respiration. With no probes and no sensors in the liquid, the method is fully non-invasive and unaffected by turbidity or morphology. OTR is independent of shaking conditions or oxygen solubility unlike dissolved oxygen (DO) measurements and correlates directly with substrate consumption and viable cell count (scientific publications available). Gain insight into cell behaviour and media performance, including media composition. Ideal for clone screening, media optimisation, toxicity studies, process development, and scale up validation. *Shortest measuring cycle possible.

The Kuhner microTOM is the only system on the market offering precise, high throughput OTR monitoring in standard microtiter plates with low costs, no manual labour, and full compatibility with your existing Kuhner setup.
