Kuhner’s Orbital Shaken Bioreactors (OSB) are designed for cultivating mammalian, human, insect and plant cell cultures. Kuhner Orbital Shaken Bioreactors are available in 4 different sizes and flexible working volumes: 1.5L-4.5L and 4L-12L (SB10-X), 15L-50L (SB50-X), 50-200L (SB200-X), and 500L-2500L (SB2500-Z).
The cylindrical vessels of Kuhner’s OSB use single-use, gamma-sterilised 3D bags that eliminate the need for additional mixing devices. Equipped with various ports for inoculation, aeration, feeding, sampling, and harvesting, these OSB support online measurement (depending on bag type) via built in chemo-optical sensors, active control of pH and DO, as well as alternating tangential flow
filtration (ATF) and tangential flow filtration (TFF) perfusion processes.
Orbitally shaken small scale culture systems are widely used for various applications. Microtitre plates available in 12, 24, 48, and 96 well plate formats, with working volumes ranging from ul to mls, are primarily used for high throughput screenings. In subsequent process development bioreactor tubes with working volume between 5ml-35ml, along with disposable shake flasks, are used. Depending on their size, these shake flasks can have a filling volume from 10ml up to 4L.
These shaking vessels share a common feature: the orbital mixing of the cultivation medium created by the shaking machine’s motion. This consistent hydrodynamics enables efficient scale-up from microtitre plates, bioreactor tubes to shake flasks, ranging from ul to ml to L scale. For further scale-up, Kuhner’s OSB can expand processes up to 2500L ensuring efficient transition from microtitre plates to pilot and production scale.
Kuhner’s Orbital Shaken Bioreactors are highly flexible, accommodating various cultivation processes with a wide range of working volumes. Suitable for research, process development, and production, they support scale-up processes as an independent pilot or production reactors. Smaller bioreactors, such as the SB10-X, can provide inoculum for larger ones like the SB50-X and SB200-X, ensuring seamless scalability.
