The Kuhner MPS-Z Automated was developed streamline cell culture cultivations in microtiter plates with or without system Duetz well plate closures. This advanced system merges Kuhner’s robust incubator shaker technology with in-house developed robotic features and interfaces, ensuring reproducible and uniform cultivation conditions and true 24/7 operation.
The MPS-Z Automated incubator incorporates CO₂, bi-directional humidity, and precise temperature control (heating and cooling with Peltier technology). The Kühner Direct Drive enhances durability with no wearable parts, while the adjustable shaking diameter (3mm, 12.5mm, 25mm, 50mm) supports a range of microtiter plate formats for various cultivation scales and volumes. Process safety remains top priority for Kühner devices. The incubator’s automated door security prevents unauthorised access and initiates a complete inventory scan upon closing. Additionally, the occupancy sensors on the SCARA (Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm) and transfer platform mitigate potential collisions. The system seamlessly resumes operation with previous cultivation parameters following a power outage. Also, an integrated UPS system safeguards against data loss, with internal storage ensuring continuous data availability.
Features
Kuhner HAWK
The Kuhner Hawk, is a purpose-designed SCARA (Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm), developed to function under aggressive conditions (CO₂/humidity). Its unique placement minimises heat input, preserving temperature consistency in the incubator chamber. The Hawk’s flexibility supports various shaking diameters and a variety of deep well plates, while its compact gripper securely holds microtitre plates, maintaining the MPS-Z Automated’s 16 well plate capacity.
Display
A large display mounted on the front door provides a clear overview of the process, displaying key parameters, the current work step, and microtiter plate positions on the clamping table. Integrated an acoustic and visual alarm management system for enhanced monitoring.
Side Door & Transfer Platform
The MPS-Z Automated features a side door with optimised size and opening time reducing impact on control parameters within the chamber. The side-mounted transfer platform includes an optional barcode reader and occupancy sensor.
Automated Clamping Table
To provide consistent cultivation results, Kuhner developed a new, patented, clamping table that securely holds microtiter plates during high-speed shaking. This operates quietly and prevents plate abrasion. Once shaking stops, the clamping table releases all plates, allowing the Kuhner SCARA gripper (Kuhner Hawk) to retrieve them effortlessly.
Interfaces
Kuhner prioritises smooth integration with automated platforms. The MPS-Z Automated supports both standard TCP/IP interface and future-oriented SiLa2 (HTTP/2) interfaces. Additionally, numerous drivers are available for compatibility with integrator and liquid handler platforms right out of the box.
With its advanced automation, precision control, and safety features, the MPS-Z represents a significant leap forward in robotic cell culture handling. Learn more at MPS-Z Automated
